MAJOR Steel industry to build plant in Alabama – cooper brothers selected to build

Jackson, Al:  SET Enterprises, Inc. (“SET”) a leading provider of steel processing services with operations in Michigan, Indiana and Illinois, announced plans to build a new state-of-the art steel processing and service center in Jackson, Alabama and has selected Cooper Brothers Construction of Selma, Alabama, as their general contractor.  Cooper Brothers Construction, founded in 1938 and annually recognized as a “Top Contractor” by Business Alabama, was selected after a competitive interview selection process with three other highly reputable Alabama general contractors.

Tom Bolton, President and CEO of Cooper Brothers Construction said, “We are thrilled to be selected as the General Contractor for SET, not only for our company, but for the city of Jackson and the state of Alabama as well.  I think SET’s selection of the Jackson community further demonstrates the commitment of both the city and the state to attract top-notch companies.  We are honored to be a part of it.  As a member of the Jackson business community, we are grateful of the confidence that SET has placed in Cooper Brothers and Jackson, and we look forward to exceeding their expectations. It’s been our pleasure to work with Mayor Richard Long and his staff along with the Clarke County Economic Development officials- all of whom were instrumental in bringing this project to fruition,” Bolton said.

Bolton continued, “Clarke County’s recent successes and announcements are indicative of the potential that the location of the new Thyssen Krupp Steel Mill is bringing to the area, and we are excited about the future growth of our area.  This new company represents a new generation of industry and jobs coming to Alabama – advanced technology and good jobs that are looking to locate where resources – both natural and otherwise - and strong governmental support are readily available and accessible.  In this day and time it takes strong companies and creative approaches to make projects of this sort a reality. This projects success came about as a result of cooperation between a diverse group of players- the management team of SET, the City of Jackson, the state of Alabama and the private business and banking sector. This high level of creativity and cooperation represent the new prototype for the future for industrial development in our state.”

At full operating levels, this new facility will be capable of processing 360,000 tons of material to support new steel production coming on-line at ThyssenKrupp Steel USA in Calvert, Alabama, as well as supporting the growth of other steel manufacturers and producers in the Southeastern United States market.

This first phase of SET’s investment is slated to be nearly $12 million for building construction and equipment.Tthese initial operations will consist of two slitting lines, including one line with the capability of processing heavy gauge material up to .500”, in a 65,000 sq. ft. climate-controlled building with ample storage space and on-site truck and rail access with barge access nearby.  The facility is scheduled to be on-line early in 2012 and will create up to 40 new jobs.

A planned second phase of the project would double the size of the facility, increase the processing capacity and services offered and expand the workforce to accommodate the anticipated growth of steel processing requirements in the region.

Located 65 miles north of Mobile, Alabama, on a key Norfolk-Southern rail corridor, the Jackson, Alabama, facility will offer critical “just in time” access to ThyssenKrupp’s operations in Calvert as well as areas throughout Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, and the remainder of the Southeast United States.

Sitework is expected to commence within 30 days and completion is expected of phase one is anticipated in January of 2012.

Company looking at major projects in Tallassee-acquiring property and looking to join forces with community in redevelopment project…
Tom Bolton, President of Cooper Brothers Construction, has, in conjunction with Mayor George McCain and local community leaders launched an ambitious and far reaching redevelopment plan for Tallassee, Alabama located along the Tallapoosa River. Consisting of 2 major projects “The Old Mill Crossing @ Talisi” and Heritage Riverfront Park”.  Development of these areas in the historic Tallassee could revitalize the local economy and help fill the void created by the tragic fire and destruction of the Hotel Talisi last fall. Mr. Bolton recently shared this concept and preliminary plan with the community at recent Town Hall meetings in Tallassee.  Preliminary photographs and architectural renderings of this development can be found by clicking on "Project Gallery" above and selecting "Current Projects." Bolton’s expanded comments can be found under his blog “Tom’s Take” found on this site.
